Five American citizens tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday in northern Kenya. The U.S. State Department confirmed the incident.
The crash happened around 9 a.m. in a mountainous area near Kirish, Samburu County. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority reported that there were seven people aboard the helicopter.
Among the deceased was José Suárez, a Telemundo executive who served as president and general manager overseeing various stations in Florida. NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde identified him in a message sent to staff members, NBC News reported.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the guests, crew, their families and loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic accident,” Lady Lori Helicopters stated on social media.
The helicopter was operated by Lady Lori Helicopters. The company expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to those impacted.
The aircraft was on a charter flight from Suyian Conservancy, a 44,000-acre private wildlife refuge, to Ololokwe when the accident transpired near Mount Ololokwe. The helicopter was a Eurocopter EC130 B4, registered as 5Y-GYM.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities, according to the helicopter operator.
The U.S. Embassy is liaising with local authorities and has committed to providing consular assistance.
The State Department stressed their commitment to American safety, stating, “The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans.” They offered condolences to the families and loved ones affected.
