Lisa Boothe, a Fox News contributor, highlights critical vulnerabilities in U.S. elections, emphasizing the issues with the honor system in citizenship verification. Her discussion on ‘The Big Weekend Show’ points out that some states have discovered instances where noncitizens registered to vote, posing a significant threat to election integrity.
A recent case involving Carlos Felipe Jaramillo-Grajales illustrates the problem. This criminal illegal alien from Colombia was sentenced to three years in prison for identity theft and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship, which he reportedly used to participate in elections over 20 years. Jaramillo-Grajales obtained a driver’s license and voted, exploiting the system’s vulnerabilities.
“Because of his fraud, he was able to obtain a driver’s license and vote in our elections,” explained DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “DHS will always fight to protect the integrity of our elections, because election security is national security.”
This sentencing arrives amidst debates in Washington, D.C. over the necessity of new legislation to enhance voter verification processes, showcasing the extremes some aliens pursue to acquire state IDs.
Secretary Mullin had previously penned a letter to secretaries of state in several states, this year, pointing out flaws in their systems. For example, about 190,830 noncitizens are estimated to have registered to vote in California.
Jaramillo-Grajales’ Case
This individual began by using the details of a U.S. citizen to obtain a passport in 2003. He then acquired a Florida driver’s license, registered to vote, and participated in the 2020 election, among others. Investigators revealed he had used the stolen identity for varied purposes. Jaramillo-Grajales even facilitated lawful permanent residence for his fiancée using this false identity.
The DHS marks his conviction as part of a broader initiative to curtail illegal activities where aliens fabricate information to vote or access U.S. benefits. They cited similar incidents with Marian Chariton from Slovakia voting illegally in New Jersey’s 2022 election and Jose Ceballos from Mexico, who faced multiple charges for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship in Kansas.
“Thanks to the hard work of the men and women of HSI, along with our federal partners, this criminal is out of our communities and, at the end of his sentence, will be removed from our country,” stated Mullin.
The conviction was part of efforts by Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, and the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Arnold B. Corsmeier.
