President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to reduce upcoming U.S.-South Korea military exercises. He argued these operations cost too much and send a hostile signal to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the military arrangement between Washington and Seoul. Writing on Truth Social, he noted the exercises reflect poorly on his relationship with Kim Jong Un. “I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea,” he stated.
Cost and Diplomacy
Trump highlighted that the exercises are costly, with the United States bearing most of the expenses. He asserted that these actions send an inappropriate signal to North Korea, a country he described as unthreatening and respectful during his presidency.
The president also linked his concern over the exercises to a separate diplomatic issue involving Iran. He mentioned asking South Korea’s President if they would join U.S. efforts to denuclearize Iran. The response was negative, which added to Trump’s frustration.
Military Context
The directive to scale back arrives just before the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, a joint 11-day military drill. The exercises aim to enhance defense readiness on the Korean Peninsula. Approximately 28,500 U.S. service members support U.S. Forces Korea, while about 18,000 South Korean troops participate in the maneuvers.
North Korea has repeatedly opposed these annual drills. Last week, Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry labeled them “a rehearsal for an aggressive war,” as reported by state media.
Recent Missiles and Regional Tensions
Trump’s order comes amidst renewed North Korean weapons testing. Pyongyang conducted two ballistic missile launches this month. After the latest test, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command confirmed close consultation with regional allies. Their assessment showed no immediate threat to U.S. personnel or allies.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that North Korea might be using the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to refine military technology. He warned that Russia relies on North Korean military support, which enhances North Korean capabilities.
Zelenskyy highlighted a significant risk to nations like Japan and South Korea as North Korea improves its arsenal through these collaborations.
Historical Context
This is not the first time Trump has reduced joint exercises with South Korea. In his initial term, following a Singapore meeting with Kim Jong Un, he called such exercises “provocative” and costly.
