Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Criticizes Conservative Exclusion from Colleges

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has voiced concerns over conservative exclusion from certain law schools and colleges. He believes institutions like Stanford Law School are largely inaccessible to conservative thought leaders like himself. During a discussion hosted by the Hoover Institute, Thomas remarked that he has never visited Stanford Law School, stating that the current climate renders some places off-limits to conservatives.

Thomas emphasized the reality of this situation, suggesting that denying it would be dishonest. He mentioned his visit to Yale Law School but reiterated the general inaccessibility faced by conservatives in higher education.

His comments highlight ongoing criticism by conservative pundits who argue college campuses are intolerant of right-wing views, leading to student indoctrination by liberal professors. Thomas mentioned that American economist Thomas Sowell’s works, which influenced his views, might be lost to students if not for platforms like YouTube.

A Stanford spokesperson countered Thomas’ claim, expressing willingness to host Justice Thomas at Stanford Law School. The spokesperson highlighted the Stanford Constitutional Law Center’s history of hosting judiciary members and welcomed the opportunity for engagement.

Despite this, instances in recent years show challenges faced by conservative speakers at Stanford. In March 2023, Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan’s visit was disrupted by student protests due to his judicial record. These protests involved LGBTQ groups and resulted in major disruptions during his presentation.

The incident prompted Stanford officials to apologize to Duncan and enforce mandatory training on protest and disruption policies. Similarly, a visit by Kyle Hawkins was met with organized student walkouts, illustrating resistance to conservative viewpoints.

Thomas did not reference specific incidents or claim invitations to speak at Stanford during his discussion. Nevertheless, he stressed the increasing difficulty of dialogue between conservatives and major academic institutions, reflecting a deep ideological divide.
