The Minnesota Vikings have made a significant decision regarding their starting quarterback position. Kyler Murray has been chosen to lead the team, surpassing J.J. McCarthy in the competition. This information comes from a source familiar with the team’s choice, who spoke to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity due to the lack of an official announcement from the team as of Tuesday.

Head Coach Kevin O’Connell had emphasized that there would be a fair competition between Murray, a new addition to the team, and McCarthy, who was already part of the Vikings’ roster. Murray received a larger share of the practice reps with the first team. However, McCarthy also had significant opportunities to showcase his skills during public practice sessions.

Murray, previously with the Arizona Cardinals for his first seven NFL seasons, is adapting to a new system and coaching staff. Choosing the starter early provides him with crucial time to familiarize himself and optimize his performance during training camp. Conversely, McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft from Nazareth and Michigan, faced challenges last year. Injuries limited him to 10 starts, affecting his performance.
