In July, the New York Islanders announced a fan-driven initiative to design the team’s next third jersey. This approach aimed to engage fans directly in the creative process and potentially mitigate criticism often directed at the team’s jersey designs.
The team recently unveiled eight finalists, chosen from the fan submissions, which have been met with mixed reactions on social media. The final selection will be determined through a bracket voting system. The feedback has been less than favorable, with many comments expressing disappointment in the overall designs.
Among the contenders, one design stands out. It features a navy color with the “ISLANDERS” wordmark and a chest stripe. This design element echoes traditional jersey styles and offers a nod to classic aesthetics.
The Islanders’ third jersey history has not been remarkable. From 2011 to 2014, they experimented with designs that many fans might prefer to forget. Nevertheless, the option to innovate is appreciated by some, even if the current options do not excite the general fanbase.
Interestingly, the design tool provided by the team for this contest was well-received. Despite the lack of dazzling results among the finalists, fans appreciated the opportunity to contribute creatively. Some designs appeared similar to other NHL teams’ past jerseys, such as the Edmonton Oilers’ old orange jerseys.
The final chosen design will be worn by the team next season. The winning designer will receive recognition with a “VIP gameday experience.” Despite the less enthusiastic reception, one of the eight designs will soon become part of Islanders’ history.
