Authorities in New Jersey are examining the circumstances surrounding the tragic stabbing of Alyne Espinal, 46, in her Somerville residence. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Espinal was found with multiple stab wounds to her chest, neck, and thigh, and she was declared deceased at the scene.
Her husband, Ignacio Espinal, 55, was detained on Tuesday in West New York, New Jersey. He faces first-degree murder charges related to his wife’s death.
Officers were called to the scene after a 911 call was made at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Thursday concerning the safety of a woman on Brookside Avenue. Responding officers found Alyne Espinal deceased due to several stab injuries at her Somerville apartment.
This incident is notably close in proximity to another tragedy in Chester, where Brooke Hanlon, a new mother, was discovered slain in her home in June. Hanlon’s case continues to confound the Morris County community.
Brooke Hanlon, 35, was found dead on June 6, and two months later, on August 6, Alyne Espinal was found dead just 15 miles away in Somerset County. An investigation into Hanlon’s death declared it a homicide, prompting action from local law enforcement.
A significant distinction between the Somerset County case and Morris County case is the rapid arrest in Espinal’s case. Days after her death, authorities identified and apprehended a suspect.
Coincidentally, Conor Hanlon, Brooke Hanlon’s husband, was previously employed by a construction contractor in Somerville, near the site where Espinal was found. Conor Hanlon has no accusations against him in connection to the recent events.
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office noted that the investigation is in its preliminary stages. Investigators are actively interviewing witnesses, examining physical and electronic records, and analyzing forensic evidence.
Ignacio Espinal faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and third-degree hindering.
