Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White has spoken out against issues surrounding the WNBA that detract from the sport itself. She expressed frustration with the criticism she faced after responding to DiJonai Carrington’s flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham. White called for a return to focusing on basketball, urging unity among her team and fans.
“The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness trying to hijack our league will not win,” White stated passionately, emphasizing her commitment to love, grace, humility, and kindness. She defended her players, asserting her unwavering support for them.
Her remarks preceded a successful game for the Fever, who scored a 106-92 victory over the New York Liberty, marking one of their best performances of the season. Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark, although disappointed by boos from fans during White’s introduction, stood by her coach, recognizing the emotional challenges they face.
The incident involving Carrington saw Cunningham hit hard and retaliate, which led to Carrington’s ejection. The controversy spiraled when Carrington referenced “white privilege” on social media, albeit later clarifying her statement. Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports has also ignited debates.
Initially, White believed the referee’s call was correct. After reviewing replays, she acknowledged the severity of the foul. Indiana Lieutenant Gov. Micah Beckwith publicly criticized White, but she maintained her solidarity with her team, emphasizing player well-being as her priority.
White explained, “I didn’t see the replay at first, but I ride with my players all the time.” Cunningham and White demonstrated their strong relationship with a post-game hug.
White faced a similar situation earlier in the season with another hard foul on Clark, which resulted in public discourse about her role. She now seeks to refocus attention on the team’s achievements.
“It’s a shame we aren’t discussing the incredible basketball played,” White remarked, reaffirming her leadership approach grounded in integrity.
