Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth Wins Republican Primary

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth has emerged as the Republican candidate for governor after winning the primary. She will compete against the Democratic nominee in November, seeking to replace outgoing Governor Tim Walz.

Demuth’s victory is significant. She continued her campaign after losing the Republican endorsement to Kendall Qualls at the state convention. Despite Qualls securing the endorsement after ten ballots, Demuth highlighted her legislative experience and leadership in the House as key strengths for the general election.

Additionally, Demuth overcame competition from MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. Although Lindell had national prominence and the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, Demuth prevailed in the race.

Republicans in Minnesota have faced challenges in statewide elections, having not won since Governor Tim Pawlenty’s re-election in 2006 by a narrow margin. Since then, Republicans have lost 28 consecutive statewide elections, marking a lengthy drought.

“Klobuchar pledges crackdown on fraud, audit of state government,” read headlines as GOP criticized Walz’s administration connections.

Governor Tim Walz had intended to campaign for a third term but chose to focus his final year on addressing fraud in state programs, which had become a significant issue. Walz launched his re-election bid earlier but faced scrutiny due to alleged misuse of federal funds in Minnesota social services and Medicaid programs.

Walz’s decision to withdraw changed the dynamics of the race. He became a prominent political figure as Kamala Harris’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate. During his tenure as governor, Walz enacted several Democratic priorities, including expanded abortion rights, free school meals, legalized recreational marijuana, and paid leave. However, his administration also faced criticism over fraud in state programs, with potential losses reaching over $9 billion.

Following Walz’s departure, speculation grew around Klobuchar as a potential candidate. Klobuchar entered the governor’s race, shifting the focus away from Walz’s tenure to the issue of confronting one of Minnesota’s well-established politicians.
