Florida Woman Survives Alligator Attack Thanks to Boater’s Quick Actions

A woman in Florida survived a harrowing alligator attack while swimming in the Silver River near Ocala. She was part of a group when she noticed an alligator coming towards them. In an attempt to ward off the animal, she used a paddle, but the alligator seized her right arm and pulled her underwater.

‘I looked just upriver from us a couple hundred feet and saw an alligator head way above the water and going full speed towards the swimmers,’ said John Gamache, who was nearby having lunch on his boat with his father. Upon hearing the commotion, Gamache quickly took action.

John Gamache steered his boat towards the group, which scared the alligator away. Reaching the woman who suffered serious injuries, Gamache used a rope from his boat to create a tourniquet on her severely injured arm. His father assisted by getting other swimmers, including children, onto the boat for safety.

They immediately transported the group to a nearby boat launch where emergency responders awaited. The injured woman was taken to the hospital, treated, and later discharged to recover at home. Despite losing her arm, she survived the ordeal, attributed partly to Gamache’s prompt intervention.

Gamache expressed relief, saying, ‘We’re glad that it happened as good as it could have. Like the result is just the sustained injury and nothing more.’

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers later found and removed the 9-foot-8-inch alligator. The affected area was reopened shortly thereafter.

Unfortunately, another similar attack occurred a month prior. Brittany Clark, aged 31, tragically lost her life in a fatal alligator attack at Little Big Econ State Forest near Orlando. While attempting to cool off in the Econlockhatchee River, an alligator bit both of her arms. Her boyfriend, Chance Allison, tried to rescue her while calling for help, but Clark succumbed to her injuries before medical assistance could arrive. Allison spoke fondly of Clark, remembering her as ‘the strongest and most outgoing person’ who enjoyed water activities.
