Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Talks Reproductive Choices Amid Political Aspirations

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced her decision to freeze her eggs as she considers future political moves before the 2028 presidential election. At 36, the New York congresswoman shared on Instagram her desire to have more control over her life through this choice.

Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, did not specify if she plans to have children. She acknowledged the ‘political risk’ involved in discussing her personal family plans publicly.

On ABC’s “This Week,” she stated she has not dismissed the idea of running for president or seeking the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Chuck Schumer in 2028. Her intention is to bring attention to the challenges women face in their professional and personal lives while critiquing the policies of former President Donald Trump’s administration.

‘In this political environment, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations,’ she stated.

The Trump administration opposed abortion rights, appointing Supreme Court justices who contributed to overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022, which had granted abortion rights. In contrast, Trump later signed an executive order in 2025 aimed at reducing in vitro fertilization costs.

In 2022, while Democrats controlled the House, Ocasio-Cortez supported a bill to codify abortion rights into federal law following the Supreme Court’s decision.

She pointed out the uneven expectations and scrutiny faced by women regarding family status, noting differences from male counterparts.

‘Men run for office, or frankly they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their minds, ‘OK, this guy’s running for office, how old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?’ she remarked.
