Ocasio-Cortez Reflects on Past Controversial Views

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing New York, recently spoke on ABC’s “This Week” about her and other socialist politicians’ past comments. She humorously referred to the “Woke 1” era as “crazy.” During the show, host Jon Karl asked her to comment on Francesca Hong, a Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate, who made controversial statements, including calling for the cancellation of Thanksgiving and the abolition of prisons. Hong is now reconsidering some of her earlier views as she pursues the Democratic nomination in her state.

Ocasio-Cortez shared a local city councilman’s saying, “Woke 1 was crazy,” to lighten the discussion. She emphasized the importance of assessing what candidates say currently.

Karl also inquired if the socialist movement had possibly gone “too far,” referencing Ocasio-Cortez’s support for police defunding. She explained that many comments emerged during COVID shutdowns when people were open to change. Ocasio-Cortez viewed these discussions as productive.

She elaborated that the discourse on crime today differs significantly from past discussions aimed at reducing crime rate. During lockdowns, the rhetoric used is not the same as today’s. She appreciates that candidates can now present themselves to voters and discuss current campaign topics.

Ocasio-Cortez is part of the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) but not the national DSA, with which she does not agree on all points, like the stance on abolishing the police.

Previously, the DSA endorsed Ocasio-Cortez, but in 2024, they withdrew support for her re-election. This withdrawal was due to unmet conditions, such as opposing funding to Israel and advocating for boycotts. The group remains divided on endorsing her for the 2028 presidential election.
