Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York shared her recent decision to freeze her eggs. She communicated her thoughts through Instagram Story videos, emphasizing how the procedure allows her more control over her future. Ocasio-Cortez also critiqued the past administration’s stance on women’s reproductive health.
The representative from New York, known for her role in the progressive ‘Squad,’ revealed this decision on Saturday. She explained that she had been contemplating and saving for this procedure for years before deciding to preserve her fertility.
“I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs,” she stated. “I was considering this for a long time, and saving for a long time.”
She shared that serving in public office means making major life choices publicly, unlike most individuals who do so in private. Ocasio-Cortez was first elected to Congress at 28, which brought its unique challenges.
Ocasio-Cortez hopes that by speaking openly about her experience, she can help normalize discussions about women’s health issues, such as fertility, pregnancy, menopause, and conditions like PCOS.
“We need to show more depictions of women living full lives,” she stressed.
She is determined to take charge of her future through this personal choice and is aware some may question her decision. However, she feels empowered by her choice.
While acknowledging her privilege in affording the procedure, she believes technological advances have made such options more accessible. The congresswoman also addressed how female politicians face more scrutiny regarding family planning than their male counterparts.
Ocasio-Cortez criticized the former administration for contributing to a hostile environment for women’s reproductive rights. She expressed her resolve to reclaim power in such discussions.
The announcement received criticism from conservatives, including Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet. He suggested Ocasio-Cortez’s decision reflects a broader progressive narrative prioritizing career over family formation.
Ocasio-Cortez has been engaged to Riley Roberts since May 2022. She first spoke about the world potentially ending due to climate change concerns, with only a few years remaining on that timeline.
She plans to document parts of her egg-freezing journey, including administering hormone injections. Ocasio-Cortez shared her experience of unboxing and using her medications, even during her busy schedule.
“I’m going to take my shot in the green room before my interview,” Ocasio-Cortez mentioned. “Because women can do anything.”
