Calls for Investigation into California AG Rob Bonta Over Netflix-Linked Donations

California Attorney General Rob Bonta faces calls for investigation from Republican challenger Michael Gates and the California GOP. They question the influence of Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings’ family on a lawsuit Bonta filed. The suit aims to block Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

Gates argues that Bonta may be favoring political donors. He stated, “Rob Bonta has turned his taxpayer-funded office into a favor factory for his political bosses and donors.” Gates believes the relationship warrants an investigation.

Campaign-finance records show Hastings’ wife, Patty Quillin, contributed $1 million to Smart Justice California Action Fund in March 2022. In May 2022, Smart Justice donated $150,000 to a committee supporting Bonta’s campaign. This is highlighted as a potential conflict of interest.

California Republican Party Chairwoman Corrin Rankin expressed skepticism about Bonta’s motives. “This smells like Sacramento at its worst,” said Rankin. She questioned if the lawsuit is about protecting consumers or fulfilling political favors.

Los Angeles attorney Elizabeth Barcohana charged that Bonta’s challenge benefits Netflix. “CA AG @AGRobBonta’s lawsuit to block the Paramount-WB merger is a corrupt political favor,” she claimed.

Bonta’s press office dismissed these allegations, asserting the lawsuit stems from antitrust concerns. They noted a February 2026 announcement of an investigation into Warner Bros.’ purchase by either Netflix or Paramount and concluded that legal action was necessary for competition and consumer choice.

The press office did not specifically address questions about communications with Netflix or whether Bonta considered recusing himself.

Federal antitrust officials earlier found that the merger’s transaction would unlikely harm competition, potentially strengthening streaming alternatives.

Bonta’s state-led litigation remains the key regulatory challenge against the merger after clearance from Britain’s competition regulator. A federal trial is set for March 2027.
