WNBA Faces Debate on Transgender Athlete Participation

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert addressed concerns about the inclusion of transgender athletes in the league. Her letter to teams followed announcements by two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who declared intentions to join the next WNBA Draft.

Engelbert noted the growing attention on transgender participation in women’s basketball. I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention, she wrote.

She appreciated team responses to media inquiries, emphasizing a thoughtful approach. Engelbert outlined the league’s plan to engage in discussions with teams and the Players Association. We recognize this is a complex and nuanced topic, she stated, inviting feedback and proposing listening sessions for team leaders.

The issue gained prominence after comments from Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham supporting the protection of women’s sports. Four head coaches have shared their views, including Cheryl Reeve and Natalie Nakase, who support the inclusion of trans athletes.

The WNBA Players’ Association released a statement supporting diversity and inclusion while cautioning against using the group in political contexts. Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm, the statement asserted.
