FAA Orders Inspections for Boeing 737 Max Planes Over Structural Concerns

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated inspections for hundreds of Boeing planes following concerns about structural integrity. This directive applies to three Boeing 737 Max models: the 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200. The rule, announced on Thursday, is set to take effect on September 10 and encompasses an estimated 471 planes.

Although no cracks have been found in the specified Max models, prior reports highlighted cracks in the forward bear strap of older Next-Generation 737 planes. Bear straps are metal sheets that reinforce key areas like doorways and emergency exits. The FAA linked the design and build process of the Max jets to these older models, indicating susceptibility to similar issues.

The FAA expressed concerns that if left unaddressed, the cracks could impact the structural integrity of the aircraft. Boeing acknowledged the problem previously and has collaborated with operators over the past six years. Inspectors received instructions for checking affected Next Generation 737s back in 2019. The FAA made these inspections mandatory in 2021, and Boeing extended the protocol to Max jets. The FAA’s recent directive formalizes these requirements for the Max models.

Boeing supports both the initial and recent directives, emphasizing continued assistance for airline customers. The FAA’s latest order includes inspections of fuselage skins of planes with existing repairs.

Boeing has faced a challenging period with safety, quality, and production issues. This follows two fatal crashes involving the Max 8 in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in 346 deaths. Additionally, an incident in 2024 involved a panel detaching from a Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines midflight. Recently, the FAA announced that Boeing would be entrusted once more with certifying its 737 Max and 787 planes.
