Kevin Gausman Joins Chicago Cubs with World Series Ambition

Kevin Gausman has joined the Chicago Cubs, continuing his quest for the World Series in his 14th major league season. Last year, he played in the World Series with Toronto, starting Game 6. However, the Blue Jays fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, losing Game 7 in extra innings after failing to capitalize on a 3-2 series lead.

The Cubs’ decision to acquire Gausman reflects their confidence in both their roster and the 35-year-old pitcher’s experience. For Gausman, returning to the World Series with the Cubs is his main goal. ‘It’s an addicting drug once you get there,’ he said. ‘Losing was heartbreaking, but playing in the World Series is what we all dream of as kids. It’s fun but also very heartbreaking. Once you’re there, all you want is to get back.’

Craig Counsell faces the task of managing a Cubs rotation that has shifted from a shortage to an overflow of pitchers. Gausman will make his Cubs debut on Friday night against the Kansas City Royals, focusing on consistency. Since his toughest outing on June 19 against the Cubs, Gausman has recorded a 6.47 ERA with 20 walks over 40 1/3 innings. ‘I need to be an innings eater and go deep into games,’ he said.

Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, has admired Gausman since his early career with Baltimore. Hoyer described Gausman as their ‘white whale’ target when they acquired him recently. Gausman looks forward to benefiting from the Cubs’ strong defense at Kauffman Stadium. ‘Having a solid defense allows you to be on the attack,’ Gausman noted. ‘In any situation, you feel the outcome will usually be in your favor.’

Dansby Swanson, who played with Gausman in Atlanta, appreciates his ability to handle pressure. ‘The game never speeds up on him,’ Swanson said. ‘He uses a unique delivery, has plus extension, and uses his pitch to put batters in a tough situation.’ Gausman’s resilience is noteworthy to Swanson. ‘He hit some bumps but stuck with it and became a great pitcher,’ Swanson added.

The Cubs have yet to see a pitcher reach the eighth inning this season. The addition of Gausman and Clay Holmes aims to alleviate the bullpen’s workload, especially as injuries have tested the team. Gausman learned of his trade during a flight to Houston. If not traded, he would have faced the Cubs, whom he struggled against in June. Now, he will pitch on Friday, aiming to contribute to the team’s momentum.
