Sam Acho on Promoting Civility in Sports and Society

2 hours ago 0

Former NFL player and current ESPN analyst, Sam Acho, recently participated in the inaugural Reagan Civility & Democracy Forum hosted by the Ronald Reagan Foundation Center. In his discussions, Acho emphasized the importance of fostering civility, particularly within sports.

Civility in Sports

Throughout the event, Acho highlighted the attributes shared between athletic conduct and civil discourse. Traits such as sportsmanship, adhering to rules, and the ability to win or lose gracefully are applicable in promoting respectful dialogue among people.

“We talked about civility in sports and how many of the same attributes athletes use can be applied to civil discourse,” Acho explained.

Conversations in NFL Locker Rooms

Acho shared his experiences from NFL locker rooms, where discussions on politics and social issues were not uncommon. He reflected on debates ranging from sports to political matters, demonstrating that athletes can have informed, respectful conversations even on sensitive topics.

“We’d have debates about… political debates… We’d talk about politics, talk about certain rules, certain laws,” he noted.

Maintaining Civility During Disagreements

According to Acho, while disagreements can sometimes cross lines, the key is to offer apologies and make amends. He stressed returning to teamwork and cooperation, even after heated discussions.

Role of NFL Figures in Promoting Civility

Acho believes NFL athletes, coaches, and executives can use their platforms to advocate for civil discourse. By staying informed and speaking on significant issues, they can enact positive change despite the risks involved.

“Life comes with risk… But oftentimes it’s not really about risk, it’s more about… how do you respond to adversity?” Acho stated.

Athletes as Multifaceted Individuals

Acho encourages athletes to recognize their roles beyond sports. He asserts the value in acknowledging both their intellectual and physical contributions to society. He draws parallels with political figures, highlighting the need for awareness beyond one’s current role.

Sophie Cunningham’s Use of Platform

Discussing Sophie Cunningham, Acho emphasized the importance of athletes using their platforms responsibly. He encouraged them to express what they believe in, aware of the associated risks.

“As an athlete, you have an opportunity to use your platform… to steward it well.” Acho emphasized.

Sports Media’s Influence on Civil Discourse

Acho addressed the role of sports media figures, many of whom have transitioned from athletic careers, in promoting civility. He described the importance of using their influence constructively, focusing on truth and integrity instead of power accumulation.

Examples of Poor Stewardship in Sports

Reflecting on a past football game between Texas and Georgia, Acho illustrated poor stewardship. Upset fans threw objects to impact referee decisions, illustrating actions he believes should be condemned by sports figures, regardless of personal affiliations.

Jackson Thompson, a sports reporter at Fox News Digital, covers political and cultural issues in sports, lending an investigative approach to his reporting. His work has been acknowledged in significant media outlets, contributing to critical discussions in the sports domain.
