The United States announced its roster for the 2026 women’s FIBA World Cup team. The lineup features many top WNBA All-Stars, showcasing the nation’s talent on the global stage.
Prominent players making the team include Aliyah Boston (Indiana Fever), Paige Bueckers (Dallas Wings), Caitlin Clark (Fever), Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), Kahleah Copper (Mercury), Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces), Rhyne Howard (Atlanta Dream), Kelsey Plum (Mercury), Angel Reese (Dream), Breanna Stewart (Liberty), A’ja Wilson (Aces), and Jackie Young (Aces).
Sue Bird, managing director of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team, explained the team’s composition. “The makeup of the roster is straightforward,” Bird stated. “We aim for a blend of experience and youth to position us for the future while ensuring the team complements each other to win gold.” She emphasized the importance of cohesiveness and playing effectively under coach Kara Lawson’s style.
Despite the roster’s strength, some notable omissions caught attention. Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty, Olivia Miles from the Minnesota Lynx, and Alyssa Thomas of the Phoenix Mercury did not make the list. Additionally, the absence of Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell sparked discussion among fans.
Fans expressed their disappointment vocally online, with comments highlighting Mitchell’s exclusion. One fan remarked, “No Kelsey Mitchell is diabolical.” Another added, “To not have Kelsey Mitchell on this roster is criminal, and I don’t even like the Fever.” Other comments echoed the sentiment, questioning the decision-making process and Mitchell’s absence.
