Russia’s Drone Activity Raises Concerns in Europe

Russia’s shadow fleet is reportedly carrying out a drone campaign in Europe. The campaign aims to monitor military sites and test NATO’s air defenses. A report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies identifies 144 suspected drones near sensitive areas in Germany, France, and the UK.

A recent incident involved a drone found at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport. The drone, carrying explosives, appeared near a Ukrainian plane late Tuesday. This prompted officials to describe the incident as representing “a new quality of danger.” The discovery led to the temporary closure of both runways at the airport. Several flights were redirected to other locations.

Only shortly before midnight, another flying object was seen in the vicinity. This led to additional flight diversions, including a passenger plane. According to reports, an airport worker encountered the drone on the south runway. The drone featured “an unknown explosive device.”

Authorities deployed a bomb-disposal robot to inspect the drone’s device, subsequently removing its detonator. The Ukrainian plane involved bore blue-and-yellow colors with the slogan “Be Brave Like Kherson,” relating to a Ukrainian region.

A second incident occurred when an unidentified object collided with a cargo plane. The aircraft had aborted its landing due to the initial runway closure. The plane then rerouted to Hannover Airport, about 125 miles from Leipzig, where officials noted minor damage.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt acknowledged the first drone’s discovery as a significant escalation. He emphasized the novelty of encountering an armed drone at an airport. Dobrindt referred to this as “a hybrid attack scenario” and stated that the case underlines the heightened threat level, which had been previously assessed as significant.

In June, Germany established a Joint Centre for Countering Hybrid Threats. This center coordinates federal and state agencies to tackle risks such as espionage, sabotage, and disinformation. NATO acknowledged the recent incidents but deferred further questions to German authorities.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, hinted at the possibility of Russian involvement. He suggested Moscow’s likely role in the event. This aligns with past incidents where Russia was linked to similar acts of sabotage and arson at European sites.
