FIFA Faces Backlash Over Failed World Cup Stake Sale Plan

FIFA issued an apology following errors linked to Gianni Infantino’s attempt to sell World Cup stakes. Senior staff at a crisis meeting in Morocco expressed their complete support for Infantino’s leadership.

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and board members in Rabat backed the president. They acknowledged missteps in handling the plan to sell World Cup profits through FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) and pledged to prevent future errors.

Infantino reaffirmed his loyalty to Grafström, who had recently criticized the plan as a ‘sad and reproachable series of events.’ FIFA assured members the FFE proposal was now void and aimed to refine its processes.

The meeting’s impact on Infantino’s future remains uncertain. Earlier, European soccer leagues, including the Premier League and La Liga, demanded FIFA governance reforms. Labeling the FFE proposal ‘dangerous,’ they highlighted governance issues within FIFA. The statement condemned the proposed World Cup expansion to 64 teams and urged involvement from all stakeholders in decision-making.

Prominent footballer Luis Figo called for Infantino’s resignation, accusing him of disgracing his position. FIFA refuted claims from British media that Infantino promised Morocco the 2030 World Cup final, with a spokesperson calling such reports ‘false and misleading.’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney critiqued Infantino for not consulting senior advisors, expressing his loss of confidence in the FIFA president. The difficult week has raised doubts about Infantino’s leadership ahead of the March elections.

UEFA hinted at a World Cup boycott over Infantino’s proposal, despite his retraction. It remains skeptical about FIFA’s leadership. CONCACAF also criticized FIFA for straying from its primary focus on football. Key FIFA figures like Arsène Wenger distanced from the FFE plans, with significant resignations hinting at internal discord.

Infantino aims for a fourth and final term in the upcoming March elections.
