LIV Golf Secures Future with New Investor

3 hours ago 0

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced earlier that it would cease funding LIV Golf after the 2026 season. This decision led to speculation about the circuit’s potential closure. However, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil has now dispelled these concerns.

Speaking at the upcoming LIV New York tournament at Trump National Bedminster, O’Neil reported that an investor has been secured to ensure the circuit’s future. While he did not provide extensive details about the investor, he did share a crucial development concerning LIV Golf’s future and its players.

“LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players,” O’Neil stated.

O’Neil emphasized that players will now hold the majority equity in LIV Golf, marking a first for a major global sports league. Detailed plans aim for a finalized transaction by September.

Despite advancements, it’s uncertain how LIV Golf will appear and which players will compete starting in 2027. The 2027 schedule is set to include 10 events, split between the United States and international locations.

There are ongoing uncertainties about the LIV Team Championship originally planned for Aug. 27-30. Reports suggest its cancellation due to travel and accommodation cancellations and outstanding payments.

Martin Kaymer, a notable LIV golfer, told Today’s Golfer that the championship was “highly unlikely” to occur.

A source close to LIV Golf acknowledged ongoing discussions with potential investors to secure long-term funding and sustainability for the circuit, which seem to have reached a positive outcome based on recent announcements.

This development indicates that LIV Golf will continue operating beyond 2026 with a renewed strategy centered on player ownership.
