Capybaras Visit Brazilian State Legislature

Brazilian lawmakers found unexpected guests at a state legislature. A group of capybaras wandered into the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly in Cuiabá on July 30. Their presence briefly distracted from a scheduled vote, as they explored the government premises.

Video taken by legislative staffer Nayara Bueno captured the capybaras moving leisurely through the entrance. Workers attempted to guide them back outside.

A group of capybaras has become a regular sight at the Brazilian state legislature’s voting sessions.

Bueno mentioned, “They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” highlighting the normalcy of such visits. Fortunately, the capybaras didn’t cause any damage during their visit.

The legislature’s location near a park, which is home to wildlife, offers the capybaras easy access to the government complex. Native to South America, these semiaquatic mammals thrive in wetlands and similar habitats. They prefer social settings, typically moving in groups, and can weigh up to 175 pounds.

The building’s proximity to a park means wildlife sightings are common, and these capybaras frequently return to the legislative ground.

Capybaras, known as the world’s largest rodents, have gained popularity online. Social media users often highlight their relaxed interactions with other animals and humans.
