The insurgency within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing marked another victory on Tuesday night as William Lawrence emerged victorious in a hard-fought Michigan primary. Lawrence, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, defeated two Democrats backed by the party’s establishment: former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and ex-Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. This win secures Lawrence the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, centered in Lansing.
Lawrence will challenge Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., a military veteran, who is seeking re-election this November. Barrett did not face any opponents in the Republican primary after securing the seat in an open race in 2024. Before Barrett, the district was represented by Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who vacated the seat to run successfully for Senate.
Lawrence’s triumph is significant in the ongoing struggle for leadership within the Democratic Party, a conflict that spans the nation. Following Lawrence’s win, Mike Marinella, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), commented to Fox News Digital, “The Democrats’ path to the House majority is evaporating in real time. Every embarrassing defeat leaves them with a radical socialist nominee, an emptier bank account, and another must-win seat off the board.”
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an influential player against the Democratic establishment, withheld endorsement in Lawrence’s race. Nonetheless, Lawrence enjoys support from prominent figures like Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., both known for their democratic socialist views.
The Sunrise Movement, initiated by Lawrence in 2017, became known as a climate activist group advocating for the Green New Deal alongside Congressional progressives. Over time, its agenda expanded beyond climate issues, including calls to remove Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from U.S. cities and abolishing policing, according to its website.
Lawrence’s win represents a strategic advantage for Republicans, who are engaged in a nationwide effort to maintain control of the House of Representatives.
