Republican Lawmakers Split Over Max Miller’s Political Future Amid Abuse Allegations

A group of Republican lawmakers has shown support for, or expressed concern about, the recent comments by Senator Bernie Moreno regarding Representative Max Miller’s suitability to continue serving in the House of Representatives. This development comes just days before an important ballot deadline in Ohio on Wednesday.

Max Miller, a two-term congressman and former White House aide under President Donald Trump, faces an ongoing legal dispute with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. He firmly denies allegations of abuse towards her or their daughter. Miller has not been charged with any crimes related to these allegations.

Bernie Moreno, Emily’s father, accused Miller of “erratic and dangerous behavior” and stated Miller “should not serve in the House.” In response, Miller accused Moreno of acting for political reasons, suggesting that Moreno’s actions came too late if the allegations held truth, and accused him of trying to distract from his own “media circus.” Miller must decide by Wednesday if he will withdraw from the ballot, which would allow a Republican replacement primary for his Ohio seat.

“Last Two Years Have Been Pure Hell”

In a social media post, Bernie Moreno described the past two years as “pure hell” for his family due to the public nature of Emily’s divorce. He stated, “It has been horrific to watch this play out in full public view, all while knowing an innocent two-year-old girl is caught in the middle. Our priority has always been protecting our daughter and our granddaughter.” Moreno reiterated his view that Miller should not hold office and suggested Miller seek professional help.

Miller’s response suggested disbelief that Moreno truly believed the accusations. He wrote, “If my daughter said the same thing to me, I personally wouldn’t wait two years before holding him accountable,” alleging the situation was politically motivated.

In a statement to Newsweek, Miller highlighted private conversations about Emily Moreno’s alleged mental health and insisted, “I am speaking up to set the record straight about my family.”

GOP Lawmakers Weigh In on Miller’s Future

Several Republican senators have voiced opinions on Miller’s political future. Kansas Senator Roger Marshall has indicated that, based on his understanding, Miller should resign. West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito has shown conditional support for Moreno’s stance, while noting she had not followed the entire case closely.

Other GOP lawmakers, such as Senator Lisa Murkowski, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations but stopped short of calling for Miller’s resignation. She mentioned the importance of holding elected officials to high standards, especially concerning domestic or child abuse.

Some senators, including Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, expressed skepticism that Moreno would be dishonest. Ohio Representative Jim Jordan commented before Moreno’s call for resignation, labeling the allegations as a family matter and suggesting that Miller is a “good man.” Despite this, Jordan extended prayers for the family during difficult times.

Axios reported that former President Trump privately expressed concerns to Miller about his reelection chances, suggesting the outlook “isn’t good.”

Miller Strongly Rejects Accusations

In a social media livestream on Sunday, Miller denied the abuse allegations, reaffirming his commitment to his reelection campaign. He shared that the accusations have severely impacted his family’s reputation and well-being.

Miller stated that no legal body has substantiated the claims. He released documents related to the allegations for public review.

Emily Moreno’s spokesperson, Stefan Mychajliw, issued a statement condemning Miller, citing a history of alleged violent behavior and criticizing him for using their daughter in political discourse. Mychajliw expressed confidence that the court would deliver justice.
