Spencer Pratt Criticizes Ben Affleck’s Views on Addiction

In a resurfaced interview from 2021 on “The Howard Stern Show,” actor Ben Affleck expressed his belief that suffering is the cure for addiction. Affleck, who has publicly battled alcoholism, remarked that expensive rehab centers and various fraudulent solutions fall short. He acknowledged Alcoholics Anonymous as helpful, though not the sole answer. Affleck stated, “The cure for addiction is suffering.”

Affleck reflected on his personal experience, admitting that reaching a breaking point with his family prompted him to quit drinking. “I lost the most important things, not career or money, but my relationship with my kids,” he shared. Affleck described the moment he realized the impact of his actions on his children as the “worst day” of his life. Since that day, he claims he hasn’t desired alcohol.

Spencer Pratt, a former Los Angeles mayoral candidate, criticized Affleck’s perspective in a social media post. Pratt, who focused on addressing the city’s addiction crisis during his campaign, reposted the clip and challenged Affleck’s theory. He invited Affleck to visit Skid Row to see the ongoing suffering among addicts. Pratt wrote, “Plenty of suffering out there, and yet, the addiction persists.”

Pratt, known for his advocacy during his mayoral run, argued that drug addiction is the root of Los Angeles’ homelessness crisis, driven by substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine. He called for involuntary treatment under California’s updated conservatorship law, citing the inability of many addicts to seek help independently.

Pratt’s approach included a five-step plan emphasizing addiction treatment over housing solutions. It involved creating rehabilitation centers outside residential areas and ending taxpayer-funded drug paraphernalia distribution. He also aimed to partner with the DEA to combat organized drug trafficking and other related issues.

Throughout his campaign, Pratt criticized opponents for inadequate handling of homelessness and addiction, spotlighting reports of abuse on Skid Row as a consequence of the city’s drug crisis. Despite losing the mayoral race, Pratt remains vocal on these issues via social media.

Ben Affleck, open about his ongoing struggle with alcoholism, first sought treatment in 2001. Subsequent rehab stays occurred in 2017 and 2018. He described alcoholism as a lifelong challenge, with relapses along the way. His commitment to sobriety has been partly motivated by his children, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.

Affleck has shared that growing up with an alcoholic father influenced his path to sobriety. “My dad, he was drunk every day,” Affleck recalled, emphasizing the importance of being sober for his children now. He expressed a desire for his kids not to pay for his mistakes or fear for him.
