House Democrat Criticizes Growing Influence of Socialist Wing Within Party

A senior Democrat in the House of Representatives, Tom Suozzi from New York, is encouraging his party to oppose the rising influence of socialism, which is gaining traction in recent years. “I don’t agree with any of those ideas and believe that they have minimal support,” Suozzi told Fox News Digital.

Suozzi compared the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to the House Freedom Caucus on the GOP’s far-right side, criticizing the DSA’s use of “democratic” in its name, as implying its ideals were primarily socialist. “Just like Republicans contend with the Freedom Caucus, Democrats need to address this group,” Suozzi stated. He stressed that the Democratic Party should oppose the usurpation of ‘democratic’ in its name.

DSA-linked candidates have been making significant headway in primary elections, even defeating incumbent progressives in states like New York and Colorado. As Republicans aim to use a perceived civil war among Democrats as leverage in the midterms, Suozzi warned Democrats to take the rise of the DSA seriously.

“I don’t spend time worrying; I take action,” said Suozzi. “I clarify that their approach differs from mine and ours, and many Democrats wrongly dismiss its significance. Instead, they should confront it and clearly separate themselves from their policies.”

Suozzi is among a dwindling group of moderates. He co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, seeking legislative solutions that garner support from both parties. His stance makes him a significant target for Republicans in the upcoming elections.

Suozzi’s district, centered on Long Island’s affluent suburbs outside New York City, had supported President Donald Trump previously. Suozzi advised Democrats to focus less on Trump as a person and more on his policy impacts, citing increased grocery, fuel, and health insurance costs as key issues brought by the current administration.

Republicans argue that Democratic control of the House would empower the party’s socialist faction, pushing unpopular policies. In New York, for instance, Zohran Mamdani, a known democratic socialist, is often used as a negative example by the right.

Suozzi has distanced himself from socialist policies and initiated “The Promise to America,” a pledge promoting capitalism, safety, pride in America, and mainstream values over extremism. He has involved 10 members of Congress and 200 state and local officials in this initiative.

Suozzi is running against Trump-endorsed Republican Mike LiPetri to retain his seat. The outcome is crucial as Democrats seek to regain House control.
