Controversy Over Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Damage

1 day ago 0

President Donald Trump criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s stance on the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Pirro attributed the damage to poor construction, contradicting Trump’s claim that vandals were responsible.

On Friday, Pirro’s office moved to drop charges against David Hearn, a former Olympian, accused of damaging the pool after its renovation for the nation’s 250th birthday celebration. Trump acknowledged potential contractor issues but maintained that vandals caused the major damage. In a social media post, Trump stated, “I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool.”

The Justice Department’s decision to dismiss charges marked a significant setback. They had initially supported Trump’s claims and viewed the prosecution as accountability for damaging a Washington landmark. Despite a lack of new evidence, Trump persisted with allegations of vandalism.

In a 20-page court filing, government lawyers, supported by new documents from the Interior Department, indicated that the damage resulted from poor contractor work and a rushed timeline before the America 250 celebration around Independence Day 2026. A recent inspection revealed widespread damage, including areas unlikely to be targeted by vandals. Hearn was accused of removing a section of the pool’s lining, but Pirro stated such damage cannot be definitively linked to vandalism.

Trump posted a video seemingly showing individuals near the pool, suggesting they used a knife or box cutter. However, the video, filmed from a distance, doesn’t clearly show any vandalism. Additionally, workers nearby appear unaware of any wrongdoing.

Trump’s plans to enhance the Reflecting Pool included painting the bottom “American flag blue.” Yet soon after completion, new liner issues arose, with parts peeling off. Trump quickly blamed vandals, and the National Park Service reported a June 9 incident claiming a sharp object cut the liner.

Trump’s renovations extended beyond the Reflecting Pool, including projects like demolishing the White House’s East Wing to construct a $400 million ballroom and plans for a large arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
