Shark Attacks and Safety Measures

Jesse Watters and Chris Fischer recently discussed a rise in shark attacks during a summer interview. Notable incidents included beach closures in New York due to bull sharks and attacks on swimmers in Florida and Queens. Fischer highlighted the resurgence of shark numbers to levels seen in the 1960s. He advised avoiding swimming where bait fish are active to enhance safety.

Expanding Range of Dangerous Silver-Cheeked Toadfish

The silver-cheeked toadfish, also known as the harefish, is becoming a concern in the Mediterranean. Originating from the Suez Canal, the fish has spread due to warming sea temperatures. Possessing toxic flesh with tetrodotoxin and powerful jaws, the fish poses risks to tourists, though it rarely attacks unprovoked. The Hellenic Red Cross warned of its dangers, stating no part of the fish is safe for consumption due to its potent neurotoxin.

Human Health Concerns and Precautionary Measures

A study in 2024 reported 198 health incidents in the eastern Mediterranean from 2004 to 2023 involving the puffer fish. These included 28 attacks, 144 poisonings, and 27 fatalities. Incidents surged post-2019, possibly due to increased awareness or fish abundance.

Greek authorities have responded by issuing warnings and setting up floating barriers to protect swimmers. These efforts, covering areas like the Gulf of Euboea, aim to prevent injuries. Fishermen are also compensated to catch the invasive toadfish, a move to control the population.

Varying Toxicity in Pufferfish

Toxicity levels differ among pufferfish species. Although most are poisonous due to tetrodotoxin, farm-raised ones that avoid toxic prey remain safe.

This dangerous fish, with its distinctive teeth and capability to breach fishing nets, currently hasn’t been found in popular tourist swimming areas but is troubling fishing activities on islands like Crete.
