Republican Senator Mitch McConnell’s public approval has hit its lowest point according to a recent CNN/SSRS survey. Released last Thursday, the poll indicates his favorability at 11 percent, marking an unprecedented low since the poll’s inception in 2006. This decline aligns with McConnell’s reduced public presence following his hospitalization.

At 84, the Kentucky senator’s absence raises questions about his political future and ability to serve. His office has provided brief updates, but the lack of detailed medical information continues to fuel speculation. According to the survey, McConnell’s favorability stands at 11 percent, with a 53 percent unfavorable view. Approximately 15 percent of respondents have never heard of McConnell, while 20 percent hold no opinion. Previous polling in October 2023 showed 16 percent favorability and 58 percent unfavorable ratings. Since 2006, McConnell’s favorability never sank into the teens until 2023, with his highest at 32 percent in December 2010.

Recent polling indicates a political toll on McConnell. Alongside his low favorability, the CNN poll suggests 59 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents would feel uneasy or upset if someone over 70 was nominated for office, while 41 percent would be enthusiastic or indifferent.

The poll surveyed 1,225 respondents from July 23 to July 27 with a margin of error of 3.2 percent. The ongoing debate over age, health, and transparency among senior Congress members is expected to persist in the national dialogue.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has urged McConnell to provide a detailed health update, emphasizing that Kentuckians deserve insight into whether the senator remains fit for his role. Beshear has taken action by sending letters to McConnell and Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune, stressing the prolonged absence since McConnell’s hospitalization.

Beshear emphasized that elected individuals, particularly U.S. senators, often sacrifice personal privacy. McConnell’s office updated on Monday that the senator is recovering from a fall and continues with physical therapy, though not yet cleared to resume office duties.
