Maryland School Employee Faces Additional Charges for Alleged Hidden Recordings

A high school employee from Maryland has been charged with secretly recording female students in a school changing room. James Mulhern III, from Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County, now faces 12 counts of minor abuse. Investigators found videos of 12 female students in various stages of undress, leading to these charges.

The investigation began when two students discovered a video camera in the control booth of the school’s theater on April 7. When they reviewed the memory card, they found videos from the girls’ changing room, prompting them to inform school authorities.

Authorities said that the footage showed an adult male placing a camera inside the room before exiting. The principal of the school identified Mulhern, a media services technician, as the individual in the footage.

Detectives executed search warrants at Walter Johnson High School and at Mulhern’s home in Clarksburg. They seized evidence and electronic devices during this search. This evidence led to the identification of eight more alleged victims, with records dating back to 2015. Initially, Mulhern faced charges involving four victims in April.

He recently appeared in court for the additional charges. The judge released Mulhern on a $100,000 unsecured personal bond. He must avoid Walter Johnson High School, have no contact with minors, and only supervised visits with his 4-year-old son.

John McCarthy, Montgomery County State’s Attorney, stated that the new evidence has raised concerns among prosecutors. Under Maryland law, each count of minor abuse carries a maximum sentence of 25 years. If found guilty on all charges, Mulhern risks up to 300 years in prison.
