The triple murder trial of Lindsay Clancy is ongoing in the South Shore of Massachusetts. Jurors listened to a distressing 911 call made by her ex-husband, which included chilling details of the mother’s severe mental health struggles. These issues reportedly persisted for months before the tragic incident on January 24, 2023, when she strangled her three children.
Conflicting Narratives Presented in Court
Prosecutors and the defense have offered conflicting versions of events. Plymouth County prosecutors argue that the 35-year-old mother made a “calculated decision” to kill her children. In contrast, her defense claims she was overmedicated and suffering from severe postpartum psychosis.
Patrick Clancy’s testimony has been central to the trial. He spoke about his ex-wife’s past suicidal thoughts and alleged she had expressed intentions of harming their children. Lindsay Clancy has pled not guilty to three first-degree murder charges for the deaths of her children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—in their Duxbury home. After strangling the children, she attempted suicide.
Patrick Clancy’s 911 Call Analyzed
On the tragic night, Patrick Clancy returned home with takeout and medicine for the kids. He discovered his bloodied ex-wife outside. During his emotional 911 call, which lasted around six minutes, he informed the dispatcher of his wife’s suicide attempt. He was desperate to keep her conscious, asking Lindsay Clancy, “What did you do?” She reportedly replied that the children were in the basement, without suggesting they were in danger. When he reached the basement, he cried out, “She killed the kids,” confirming the horrific reality.
In court, Lindsay Clancy broke down while listening to the recording. Her ex-husband had left the courtroom before it played. The judge had previously allowed Patrick Clancy’s request not to release the call’s audio to the media. CBS Boston’s Kristina Rex described the call as “horrific.”
Prosecution’s Presentation of Evidence
Before playing the 911 call, the prosecution showed the jury the victims’ clothing and exercise bands allegedly used by Lindsay Clancy to strangle her children. During this presentation, she kept her head down. Patrick Clancy recounted finding Cora, his 5-year-old daughter, in the basement with a band around her neck. Next to her, 8-month-old Callan also had a band around his neck. Patrick Clancy then discovered 3-year-old Dawson with a band around his neck in another room. He tried CPR on the children until first responders arrived.
Testimony on Mental Health
Patrick Clancy described his ex-wife as a dedicated mother struggling with chronic insomnia, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. He stated that her mental health worsened in the lead-up to the tragedy. Despite the mounting struggle, she seemed to have one of her better days just before the incident.
Defense Highlights Lindsay Clancy’s Medications
Defense Attorney Kevin Reddington presented evidence of the many medications Lindsay Clancy had been prescribed. Her diary detailed how these medications affected her. On December 12, she wrote about experiencing “horrible thoughts & no motivation” after taking certain medications.
During the trial, Patrick Clancy explained that his ex-wife took the medications as prescribed. However, under questioning by Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague, he clarified that he was not always present to witness her taking the pills.
Jury to Visit the Crime Scene
The jury will visit the Duxbury home where the alleged crime occurred. The court order permits visual inspection of the property, including the basement and all first and second-floor rooms. Jurors will not be allowed to open closets or disturb any items.
