First Lady Melania Trump did not attend two significant Washington events recently: Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral on Tuesday and the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday.
President Donald Trump was present at both occasions, including giving a speech at Graham’s funeral, but the First Lady was not with him. Newsweek contacted the First Lady’s press office on Tuesday, which chose not to comment on her absence from either event. The White House previously informed Fox News that she had another engagement preventing her attendance at Friday’s gathering.
After Graham’s passing, Melania Trump released a statement honoring the senator’s dedication to public service. “I am saddened by the unexpected passing of Senator Graham,” she stated. “Lindsey devoted his life to the service of our nation, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his duties. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his enduring legacy.”
Concerns Arise Amid Reports of a Threat to the First Lady
The absences have drawn attention as the U.S. Secret Service confirmed on Monday to Newsweek that it is investigating a video with links to Iran allegedly targeting Melania Trump. The agency reviews all threats aimed at those it protects.
“The Secret Service is aware of the video and investigates anything perceived as a threat toward our protectees,” said Nate Herring, a lead public affairs specialist with the U.S. Secret Service’s Communications and Media Relations office, to Newsweek on Monday.
His statement followed reports of a video released by an Iranian state-linked media channel targeting the First Lady, amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. “Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence,” Herring added.
There is no public evidence linking Melania Trump’s non-attendance at the events to the aforementioned threat, and no official connection has been made.
