Returning to the NBA after a significant time overseas is uncommon for former draft picks. Mario Hezonja, however, has achieved this feat. The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed the 31-year-old Croatian to a one-year deal worth $2.8 million, marking his return to the NBA since 2020.
Back in 2015, Hezonja was the fifth overall pick by the Orlando Magic, entering with high expectations. Despite this, his performance did not meet the anticipated levels at the time. During his five NBA seasons with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, he averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over 330 games before leaving the league.
Instead of fading, Hezonja shifted to Europe, where he successfully rebuilt his career. Playing for Real Madrid, he became one of the top wings in European basketball. Hezonja helped his team secure a EuroLeague title and earned Liga Endesa MVP honors last season, enjoying significant achievements in Europe.
Now, Hezonja has another NBA opportunity with the Cavaliers. This move presents minimal risk for the Cavaliers while offering potential benefits. They acquire a 6-foot-8 wing who has excelled in European competitions and could potentially translate that success to the NBA. If Hezonja finds it challenging to adjust, the team can move on without substantial loss. If successful, this signing might represent one of the most valuable acquisitions of the offseason.
Although Cleveland missed out on acquiring LeBron James, they might have discovered another asset in Hezonja.
