Ryan Clark, a well-known NFL analyst, is no longer with ESPN. His departure followed a report from OutKick, which indicated that Clark was among several on-air talents let go by the network on July 21. The focus of the story shifted towards the reasons and implications surrounding the situation rather than the termination itself.
Clark reportedly got the news during a taping of ESPN’s ‘NFL Live’ on Monday. This happened after OutKick asked ESPN for comment upon obtaining information about the potential layoffs. ESPN informed Clark during the taping as a strategy to prevent OutKick from breaking the story.
The sports media community quickly reacted, painting Clark as a victim and ESPN as the villain in this scenario. Clark, who spent over 11 years with ESPN, stated in his first public comments after the termination that ESPN might have leaked the news to OutKick intentionally.
Jason “Jah” Lee, speaking on ‘CNN This Morning,’ questioned the situation’s dynamics and suggested Clark’s release was part of a broader “culture war.” Lee, Bossip’s senior editor, remarked, “I think Ryan Clark got swept up in some level of culture war retribution.” He wondered how OutKick acquired this information.
OutKick, linked to Fox News Corp and established by Clay Travis, is noted for its conservative leanings. Lee speculated that the leak was aimed at embarrassing Clark, suggesting ESPN, often labeled as a bastion of liberal perspectives, may have wanted to shift direction in this decision.
Ryan Clark, who retired from the NFL in 2015 after a successful career, including a Super Bowl win with the Pittsburgh Steelers, started as an NFL analyst at ESPN that year. Reports suggest he earned around $2 million annually, significantly higher than the average NFL analyst salary.
