Punch the Monkey Celebrates First Birthday with Global Fans

Punch, the orphaned monkey at a Japanese zoo, celebrates his first birthday with a flood of heartfelt messages from fans worldwide. His story began when he was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden. Zookeepers provided him with an orangutan plushie to help develop his grip, a critical skill for young macaques.

Life Beyond the Plushie

Now, Punch has integrated into the zoo’s monkey enclosure. No longer clinging to the plushie, he is indistinguishable from other monkeys, though he still draws large crowds. Takashi Yasunaga, the zoo’s head, noted that Punch has received approximately 2,500 birthday cards from fans both in Japan and overseas. These messages adorn the walls of a special indoor exhibit about Punch’s journey.

Punch’s Rise to Fame

In mid-January, after six months of careful nurturing by zookeepers, Punch joined the zoo’s community of about 50 monkeys. This transition contributed to his popularity. By February, a social media post featuring Punch with his toy catapulted him to fame, attracting tens of thousands of visitors, half of whom traveled from abroad.

Initially, when other monkeys shunned him, Punch would return to his plushie for comfort. Fans rallied around him with messages of support on social media, recognizing not just his charm but his perseverance in seeking acceptance among his peers.

Visitors Inspired by Punch

Several visitors shared deep connections with Punch. Kumi Ishizawa from Kobe discovered Punch on social media and made it her goal to visit him despite her illness. She recently fulfilled that dream, expressing joy at seeing him in person.

Another fan, Yeye Lights, became a frequent zoo visitor after her daughter in the Philippines introduced her to Punch’s story. She even celebrated Punch’s birthday with a cake, showing deep appreciation for the care provided by his keepers.
