Rick Moranis Excites Fans with ‘Spaceballs: The New One’ Sequel Announcement

Rick Moranis thrilled audiences at Comic-Con International with exciting news for fans of ‘Spaceballs.’ The actor confirmed the development of ‘Spaceballs: The New One,’ a sequel to the 1987 cult classic. Moranis had been frequently asked when a follow-up would be made, and fans were overjoyed with his announcement.

An Electrifying Panel at Comic-Con

The announcement took place in Hall H, where Moranis surprised the audience by hiding among them with his character’s signature oversized helmet. His return to the role of Dark Helmet was met with loud applause from the crowd. ‘This came along at the right time,’ Moranis said. ‘It is the best decision I ever made. It’s like family to me.’

Joining Moranis on stage were director Josh Greenbaum, writer and actor Josh Gad, and writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. New cast members Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman were also introduced, although their characters remain under wraps.

Keke Palmer expressed her delight with the script. ‘It was so funny that I kept being like, Oh my God! Can you believe they said that?’ she shared about her experience reading it for the first time.

Lewis Pullman, son of original cast member Bill Pullman, admitted his initial hesitation about joining the film due to his connection with the original. However, the quality of the script changed his mind. ‘I read it and I was like, Damn it. This is so good,’ he stated, noting that he typically doesn’t laugh out loud while reading scripts.

While Mel Brooks and Bill Pullman were absent, they conveyed their support through a prerecorded video. Attendees were treated to behind-the-scenes footage featuring Brooks, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, as well as a teaser trailer glimpse.

Josh Gad disclosed that he’d portray a new mawg character, honoring the memory of John Candy and other deceased original cast members like Joan Rivers and Dom DeLuise. In good humor, the team showcased a parody of popular ‘cinematic universe’ timelines with a series of imagined sequels sweeping across the screens as ‘The Almighty Schwartz Saga.’
