Debate Over Mamdani’s Comments on Netanyahu and Voting Integrity Raised

Rep. Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey has expressed criticism towards New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani made controversial statements about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing accusations of war crimes. Gottheimer questions Mamdani’s alignment with democratic values, arguing that Mamdani and similar figures are pulling the party away from its traditional principles.

Gottheimer stated, “He’s not a Democrat, he’s socialist… many of their values are not our values.” He highlighted Mamdani’s positions against police and law enforcement, and his desire to eliminate the United States Senate. These views, Gottheimer contends, indicate a departure from core democratic ideals.

In a related controversy, over 6,000 non-citizens were mistakenly added to voter rolls in New Jersey due to a software error. This incident raises concerns about election security and the integrity of voting processes.

“They have lots of views which are not in line with Democratic values. They’re very anti-American, anti-Democratic, anti-capitalist,” Gottheimer said. “I can’t understand a lot of their thinking.”

This criticism comes after Mamdani’s defense of his pledge to honor an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu if he visits New York City. Despite advocating for this in his campaign, Mamdani admitted he lacks the authority to enforce such an action. He called on the federal government to uphold the ICC’s warrant.

Gottheimer commented on Mamdani’s focus, saying, “The mayor is clearly obsessed with this issue.” He suggested that Mamdani should prioritize city issues like sanitation and infrastructure. He further pointed out, “What shocks me about all of this is the double standard.” He noted previous instances where Iranian leaders visited New York, questioning Mamdani’s selective focus on Netanyahu.

In defense, Mamdani clarified that his intentions are not exclusive to Netanyahu. “My interest in executing that warrant is not specific to Benjamin Netanyahu, but to anyone who they put a warrant towards for war crimes and crimes against humanity,” he stated. Mamdani sees himself as advocating for a universal approach to justice and accountability around war crimes.
