Pit Bull Shot by L.A. County Deputies During Attack in Lancaster

On Monday morning, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies responded to a distressing scenario in Lancaster where a pit bull was fatally shot. The incident took place on the 43200 block of 20th Street West and involved a man being attacked in the front yard of a residence.

Authorities received a 911 call at 9:53 a.m. about the dog attack. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies witnessed the pit bull vigorously assaulting a man who appeared unresponsive within a fenced area that had a locked gate. The deputies initially attempted to halt the attack using verbal commands, however, these efforts failed as the dog did not respond.

Faced with a critical situation, one deputy fired at the animal, promptly ending the attack. The pit bull died, and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition by Monday evening.

Investigations have revealed that the dog belonged to a member of the victim’s family residing in the same home. The authorities are continuing to explore what triggered this violent encounter. L.A. County Animal Control also arrived to take responsibility for the dead animal.

Lancaster Station Capt. Paul Bartlett commended the deputies’ rapid and courageous response, stating, “When our deputies arrived, they encountered a life-threatening emergency and acted without hesitation to save a man’s life. After stopping the attack, they immediately transitioned from addressing the threat to providing lifesaving medical care until firefighters arrived.”

In a similar situation last July, Lancaster saw another tragic event where a man was killed by two pit bulls during a backyard attack. In that case, a deputy also resorted to shooting a pit bull, but the victim later died from his injuries.
