Controversy Over Mamdani’s Arrest Proposal for Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn significant attention by advocating for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his anticipated visit to the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani bases his call on allegations of war crimes against Netanyahu, leading to strong criticism from Israel’s Prime Minister’s office.

The situation also highlighted anti-Israel sentiments voiced by Hasan Piker, who gave a speech at a college Democrats convention. Additionally, an old video clip from 2023 has resurfaced, in which Mamdani refers to Israel as “an idea,” reigniting criticism of his views on the Jewish state. He stated, “For so many people, Israel is not a place. It is not the country, it’s an idea,” during an episode of the “Here & Everywhere: The Solidarity Roundtables” podcast.

Mamdani challenged American politicians’ unwavering support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, pointing out that their rhetoric is outdated. He remarked, “Their answers were written 20, 30 years ago. They speak to a reality that does not exist.” His comments have been perceived as part of a pattern of critique towards Israel, straining his relations with the Jewish community.

Zohran Mamdani, originally from Uganda, secured the Democratic primary for New York City mayor in June. His remarks have sparked various reactions, with figures like Hussain Abdul-Hussain from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies critiquing Mamdani for living in a “bubble” and having “shallow knowledge.” Critics on social media also labeled him as “an extremist” on the issue.

Prominent voices like Aviva Klompas, CEO of pro-Israel education group Boundless, have emphasized, “Israel is certainly an idea… and Israel is very much a place.” Other political figures like Stephen Miller and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders have also commented on the ongoing situation.

Mayor Mamdani has articulated criticisms of Israel’s actions in Gaza and accused the nation of genocide, while supporting pro-Palestinian movements. He made headlines for not attending New York City’s Israel Day Parade in May, a first for a sitting mayor since its inception in 1964.

As discussions continue among city officials about the legality of arresting Netanyahu during his U.N. visit, Mamdani underscores his backing of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against the Prime Minister. Speaking to the New York Times, Mamdani reiterated, “I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague.” The ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu in November 2024 for alleged war crimes in Gaza.
