Concerns Over Democratic Socialists of America’s Direction

Jake Altman, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), shared insights on Saturday regarding changes within the organization, claiming it has been influenced by communist ideologies. During an interview, Altman expressed concerns that this development is pushing the Democratic Party further left.

Altman commented on Fox News, “Their organization has been captured.” He warned that the DSA’s resistance to anti-communist sentiment, even among its moderates, poses a significant threat. Altman sees this trend as dangerous, especially given the political climate.

“People who want to pull down American institutions and are very clear about it,” he said. “People who have this thrill to violence. That is just profoundly troubling at a time when our country is already facing many, many problems.”

Altman further described the DSA’s willingness to align with groups like Maoists, Trotskyists, and Leninists, which he sees as problematic. These groups, according to Altman, aim to dismantle American systems.

The report showcases a 2019 May Day rally in New York City where DSA members gathered outside a Trump-owned building. The rising influence of socialism within the Democratic Party has sparked concern for the future of the American Dream.

Altman recounted experiences from nearly a decade ago, mentioning a debate within the organization that questioned his alignment with its future path. At the time, he was informed that the more radical elements were isolated within a faction concentrated around “Jacobin” magazine.

He shared his experience debating Leninists who denied Bernie Sanders as a genuine socialist, a sentiment now echoed by the DSA. Altman described the current extremism and radicalism as pervasive. He noted the organization’s executive board consists largely of individuals from various extremist caucuses.

“So I think this is just the level of extremism and radicalism we’re seeing,” he reflected. “People in DSA will try to minimize it and say it’s just a few people… they’re a small minority. But… look at the executive board. It’s full of this alphabet soup of extremist caucuses.”

Alman’s concerns highlight an urgency for Democrats to oppose a radical base, as far-left DSA candidates gain traction nationwide. He urged that DSA members aim to gain power by targeting both moderate and progressive Democrats, often through damaging strategies.

Despite these warnings, the DSA has yet to comment on Altman’s assertions. Efforts to reach them for a statement were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
