An Israeli military strike resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left many injured in central Gaza on Friday. The strikes come amid heightened tensions and a surge of military activities in the region.
According to the Israeli military, the operation targeted members of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the largest militant groups in Gaza. The military acknowledged reports claiming that several civilians may have been affected by the strike. A statement from the military indicated that the results of the attack are currently under review.
Despite a cease-fire deal backed by the United States in October, Israel has ramped up its military actions in Gaza. Israeli authorities stated that these operations primarily target Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants involved in the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. That incident resulted in 1,200 fatalities, 251 hostages, and intensified the ongoing conflict.
The militant group Hamas, which governs much of Gaza, publicly condemned Friday’s strike, labeling it an “ugly massacre.” They alleged the attack was aimed at a funeral procession but did not specify the deceased.
Awdeh Hospital, responsible for treating the victims, confirmed that seven individuals lost their lives due to the strike. Dr. Mohammed Salha, a physician at the hospital, reported another fatality from a different incident on the same day.
Osama Hmaid, a 39-year-old resident of Nuseirat, the town affected by the strike, reported numerous attacks in recent days.
