Teen Develops AI Website to Reduce Food Waste

A teenager, Smit Kothari, has created an AI-powered website called Grocery Genius aimed at reducing food waste and hunger. Kothari, 17, from Virginia, designed the platform to generate custom recipes using available pantry ingredients, track inventory, and provide nutritional information and health ratings.

Custom Recipe Generation

The website allows users to input ingredients they have at home. The AI generates three recipe ideas, also offering nutritional details and tips for cost savings. It accommodates dietary restrictions and various cooking skill levels.

Smart Pantry Features

Grocery Genius includes a “Smart Pantry” tool, notifying users before food items expire. This feature encourages using or donating food prior to expiration, helping to address food waste and hunger simultaneously.

“Some people are letting foods expire, they waste it, while many others are starving,” Kothari noted.

Kothari’s initiative is partially inspired by a visit to Africa, where he witnessed families grappling with hunger. He realized a big focus of his project needed to be combating this issue.

User-Friendly and Free Access

The website brands itself as “your kitchen’s smartest assistant” and is available for free with just an email sign-up. Christopher Tan, president and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, mentored Kothari. He praised the app for its versatility in helping both families in need and those who donate.

Community Recognition

Grocery Genius received second place in the national Congressional App Challenge, promoting coding and computer science careers among students. Kothari, a senior at Ocean Lakes High School, intends to keep enhancing the app based on user feedback while attending college.
