Edvardas Stasys, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Benet, is gaining attention in the college basketball recruiting landscape. Recently, he received an offer from Illinois, a significant milestone as it marks his first offer from a Big Ten school. The Illini staff have caught his attention, although he plans to carefully consider all options before making a decision.

Stasys aims to major in finance or business and intends to thoroughly evaluate his growing list of suitors. Among the schools that have extended offers are Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Belmont, Central Michigan, Harvard, Holy Cross, Robert Morris, Western Michigan, and Yale.

Illinois’ Strategic Recruitment

Illinois, having advanced to the Final Four earlier this year under coach Brad Underwood, has intensified local recruitment efforts, particularly in Chicago’s western suburbs. This strategy includes targeting Naperville area talents. Illinois already secured commitments from Neuqua Valley senior guard Mason Martin and has extended an offer to Martin’s teammate, Cole Kelly.

Benet coach Gene Heidkamp has praised Illinois’ program and the opportunities it presents to local players. He acknowledges the positive impact on Stasys, commenting on his growth and the significance of receiving an offer from a Big Ten school.

Stasys’ Role and Expectations

Stasys, as a third-year varsity player and All-State third-team honoree, is expected to be a key player for the Redwings. He averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists last season. Heidkamp has high hopes for Stasys, believing he will continue to develop and excel.

Stasys transitioned from a reserve role to becoming integral to Benet’s performance last season. His ability to handle the ball, play in various positions, and his proficiency in different offensive facets make him versatile. Coach Heidkamp plans to leverage these skills, allowing Stasys to participate in multiple roles.

Improving offensive skills is a priority for Stasys. He emphasizes shooting, playmaking, and gaining confidence with the ball. His role has expanded significantly from his sophomore year, where he focused more on defense and rebounding.

Despite personal achievements, Stasys remains team-focused, aiming for a state championship win. He plays center at Benet and adapts to whatever role benefits the team most, embracing his versatility.
