From Janitor to Doctor: Shay Taylor-Allen’s Journey

Shay Taylor-Allen from New Haven, Connecticut, has a remarkable story of transformation. At 18, she began working as a janitor at Yale New Haven Hospital, the very place where she was born. In 2010, fresh out of high school, she took the position to support herself and her family.

Although becoming a doctor was not originally part of her plan, Taylor-Allen told Newsweek that her role as a janitor provided an invaluable perspective on healthcare. “I saw firsthand how every member of the hospital team contributes to patient care,” she explained. Despite sometimes feeling invisible, her tasks were crucial. She cleaned patient rooms, disinfected surfaces, emptied trash, and kept the environment safe and clean for everyone.

Over time, Taylor-Allen began to view her janitorial position as a steppingstone, revealing numerous opportunities in the healthcare field. Her career trajectory took a decisive turn when her mother fell seriously ill, struggling to get a diagnosis. This personal experience motivated her to advocate for patients by pursuing a medical career.

Taylor-Allen enrolled at Southern Connecticut State University, where she obtained an undergraduate degree. She then earned a master’s degree from Quinnipiac University and attended Howard University College of Medicine for her medical degree. She worked as a janitor during her undergraduate and master’s studies, leaving the job when she began medical school in 2021.

After years of persistence and overcoming challenges, Taylor-Allen graduated with a degree in medicine. “Graduating from medical school was incredibly emotional,” she shared, reflecting on the sacrifices and setbacks throughout her journey. Completing her education was a powerful reminder of the value of perseverance.

She is now in her residency, training in anesthesiology at Yale New Haven Hospital—the same place she worked as a janitor for a decade. This “full-circle moment” reinforces the idea that every role is important.
