Beluga Whale Relocation from Canadian Theme Park

Beluga Whales Relocation Effort

Twenty-eight beluga whales from a closed Canadian theme park are set to be relocated to aquariums across the United States. This comes after federal authorities approved an emergency import as part of a coordinated international rescue mission.

Closure of Marineland

In 2024, Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, ceased public operations but continued to house the belugas. Unable to sustain their care, the park announced a critical need for relocation or funding to prevent euthanization of the animals.

Planned Destinations

The belugas will be moved to various accredited aquariums, such as SeaWorld San Antonio and San Diego, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Additionally, pending permit approvals, two whales will travel to Oceanografic Valencia in Spain.

NOAA’s Involvement

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expedited the relocation to provide specialized medical treatment unavailable in Canada. The agency highlighted the lack of suitable facilities in Canada for the whales’ care.

Relocation Timeline

According to statements from involved aquariums, the rescue will take several weeks, prioritizing the comfort and safety of the whales throughout the process.

Marineland’s Record

Marineland has faced criticism regarding its treatment of animals, having noted the death of twenty belugas since 2019. In response to animal welfare concerns, Canada enacted legislation in 2019 to cease the captivity of whales and dolphins.

Government Action

Canada’s Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson approved the conditional relocation proposal for the belugas in January. Final export clearance awaits completion of health checks for each whale.
