In July 2024, photographer Joan Monfort recounted the challenges behind capturing a memorable image for The Athletic. It was a difficult shot, Monfort shared, reflecting on his famous photo of a young Lionel Messi alongside a baby Lamine Yamal. Messi, known for his reticence, displayed his early shyness as a burgeoning Barcelona star. Despite initial difficulties in establishing interaction, the shoot resulted in a cherished photograph.

Back in December 2007, Monfort photographed Messi, then a 20-year-old football prodigy, and Yamal, a mere five months old. The picture found a place in a 2008 charity calendar organized by Barcelona’s foundation and Diario Sport. Funds raised were directed to UNICEF and other Catalonian charities. As part of an annual tradition, Barcelona squad members posed with children, leading to many moments immortalized in private memories. Yamal, destined to become a future Barca star, was paired with Messi, a future eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The two, now icons of the sport, are set to compete at the World Cup final in MetLife Stadium as Spain faces Argentina. The bathing photo and others from the session gained attention during Euro 2024 when Yamal’s father shared them on social media. It’s something incredible, Monfort remarked, acknowledging that back in 2007, neither Messi’s nor Yamal’s future successes could be foretold.

During the photoshoot, Messi had already achieved two La Liga titles and a Champions League victory. He was emerging amid stars like Ronaldinho, Xavi, and Thierry Henry. Monfort recalled the structured process of receiving 12 players for each month of the calendar. The shoot required patience, as interactions between an adult and a baby can seem awkward, but the presence of Yamal’s mother was crucial.

Monfort endeavored to ensure every family received copies of their photos, understanding the excitement and dedication exhibited by parents like Yamal’s. Despite living 40 kilometers away, Yamal’s parents committed to bringing their child to the Camp Nou. Years later, Yamal began regular training with Barcelona’s La Masia academy and debuted in La Liga at age 15. By 2023, Yamal had represented Spain internationally, becoming a central figure in their Euro 2024 triumph.

At the club level, Yamal dons Messi’s famed No 10 shirt, continuing the legacy of the Argentine legend, who joined Barca at 13. Monfort reflected on the unlikely serendipity that brought their paths together. Technological advancements today allow for easier sharing of such images, though Monfort draws parallels to historical photos such as that of Pep Guardiola applauding manager Terry Venables in 1986.

Nowadays, Monfort juggles freelance photography assignments for Diario AS and Agence France-Presse. He was astounded when his colleague identified the old photo during Euro 2024. It’s been really surprising, he admitted. The image has become the most renowned of his career, drawing immense attention again during the World Cup. With Yamal’s continued growth in football, the photograph’s significance may expand, capturing a unique moment in sports history.
