Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has revealed a new gold $1 coin featuring President Trump, marking a significant move in the U.S. Mint’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence.
Critics have raised legal concerns regarding the coin and accused President Trump of using it for self-promotion. Traditionally, an 1866 law has dictated that only deceased individuals should appear on U.S. currency, to prevent any monarchical implications.
Despite the controversy, the Treasury Department defends the decision, citing the authority granted by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The Department emphasizes that the coins are designed to symbolize the United States’ semiquincentennial and reflect President Trump’s vision for the nation.
This new initiative is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to intertwine the president’s legacy with American currency, including his signature on new notes and proposals for a $250 bill featuring his portrait.
Changes to American money often spark debate, with imagery selected reflecting national identity in many ways.
