Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ricky Bottalico recently shared his perspective on a 1998 altercation involving Barry Bonds. The incident was revisited during a Netflix broadcast featuring Elle Duncan, Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, and Anthony Rizzo.
In a Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants matchup, Bottalico’s pitch struck Bonds, leading to the latter charging the mound. Bottalico’s role was highlighted in Bonds’ sole mound charge during his career.
Ricky Bottalico, pictured here pitching against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, had earlier claimed during media appearances that he intended to hit Bonds, as directed by his coaches.
Elle Duncan had claimed Bottalico’s pitch accidentally strayed off course. Bonds refuted this narrative, asserting, “No, it didn’t, it did not get away.”
“He’s a good pitcher and he’s a good man. In that situation, it was part of the game of baseball during that time, and I accepted it,” Bonds shared.
Bottalico later reinforced his side of the story during his appearance on 97.5 The Fanatic, challenging Duncan’s version, stating:
“That is a bold-faced lie. I was told to go in and hit Barry Bonds. It’s that simple.”
Bottalico clarified that public statements at the time required him to deny deliberate intent. “I had to say I didn’t do it on purpose or else I’m suspended for a month.” He recalled being told by his coaches, “Do not tell me you did it on purpose.”
The pitch stemmed from team irritation as Bonds had stolen a base while his team was leading by seven runs. Bottalico had undergone surgery, expecting rest from play, yet was tasked with the Bonds encounter due to his unexpected return that day.
Bottalico’s career highlights included his All-Star appearance in 1996 with a 3.65 ERA over 69 games. He pitched for the Phillies for five years before taking on a journeyman role.
Ricky Bottalico’s candid recounting reflects a complex era of baseball, marked by competitive tension and strategic decisions on the field.
