American League Dominates All-Star Game with 4-0 Victory

PHILADELPHIA – Dylan Cease showcased his pitching prowess by striking out the side in the first inning. He, along with 10 relievers, orchestrated a three-hitter that secured the American League a 4-0 win over the National League in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.

All-Star MVP Cody Bellinger made a significant impact with a two-run single. Ben Rice followed up with an RBI single in the first inning against Cristopher Sánchez, playing for the host Philadelphia Phillies. Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox added a solo home run in the eighth inning off Dodgers’ pitcher Justin Wrobleski, marking the game’s only extra-base hit. Notably, Wrobleski struck out five batters during his two innings on the mound.

The American League’s triumph is their 18th in the last 23 games, boosting their overall tally to 49-45-2. The National League could only manage three singles from Juan Soto, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Otto Lopez in different innings, none advancing a runner past first base.

Pitches from both teams combined for a total of 27 strikeouts, with AL pitchers delivering 15 of those. Cease’s phenomenal first inning included striking out Kyle Schwarber, Juan Soto, and CJ Abrams, making him one of the seven pitchers to achieve such a feat in an All-Star opening inning. His performance joins the ranks of pitchers like Carl Hubbell, Warren Spahn, and Pedro Martinez.

Parker Messick, Michael Wacha, Joe Ryan, Nick Martinez, Cade Smith, Drew Rasmussen, Jacob Latz, Louis Varland, Aroldis Chapman, and Bryan Baker completed the AL’s first All-Star shutout since 2013. Notably absent were key starters Jacob Misoriowski, Paul Skenes, and Shohei Ohtani. Additionally, only six pitches reached 100 mph, a rare occurrence since 2021.

Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice capitalized on Sánchez’s 34-pitch inning, contributing three hits and two walks. The utility of sinkers played a central role in the inning.

Among the spectators was Mike Trout, a 12-time All-Star, who went 0 for 3 in his first game since 2019 because of injury issues. Dodgers players like Max Muncy and Andy Pages also had quiet nights, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto did not pitch.

Notable Incidents

Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero left the game in the third inning after being struck on the hand by a 97.6-mph sinker from St. Louis closer Riley O’Brien. Despite initial concerns, X-rays later showed no serious injury.

Historic Touches

The pre-game ceremonies added a historic flair. Managers and starters walked through replica Liberty Bells to home plate. They used feathered quills to sign oversized lineup cards, reminiscent of signing the Declaration of Independence. The field featured 13 stars symbolizing the original Colonies.

Fireworks lit up the sky after the fourth inning, set to a video of Ray Charles singing “America the Beautiful” from the 2001 World Series. Previously announced in 2019, Philadelphia’s hosting of the All-Star Game aligned with the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations. The Phillies previously hosted games in 1976 and 1996, while the Athletics did so in 1943 and 1952.

Next year, Wrigley Field in Chicago will be the venue, welcoming the All-Star Game for the first time since 1990.
